ISTD Mini Project

During our first semester, we were introduced to the International Society of Typographic Designers student assessment scheme. This is where design students from around the world can carry out an assessment to receive the ISTD certification. We were tasked with choosing one of the five assessment briefs and to research and create ideas as if we were taking this assessment. The brief I chose was called "The Spaces Between". Due to the vague description, I went down the path of space between consciousness and unconsciousness. To show this, I wrote the word 'consciousness' and used leading to expand the spaces between each letter. Then I wrote the definition of the word behind. By progressively changing the opacity of the definition, I was able to physically show the journey from conscious to unconscious as if someone was falling asleep. This would also imitate someone's volume as they fall asleep, from loud and getting quieter as they start falling asleep.
