Wearable Technology/Home Automation Device
Project type
Product design
For this project, we needed to create a piece of wearable technology or a home automation device inspired by the Sustainable Development Goal 2 which is to end world hunger and for everyone to have universal access to safe and nutritious food by 2030. My role in this project as a designer was to create the logo for the brand, create the brand guidelines and to also design a working app which could be connected to the product.
My group's final product was a rucksack that would have storage space in the top compartment and then would have a heating element in the bottom compartment which would allow people to warm food up when they are hiking. The bag would also include solar panels on the outside to power the heating element. As a way to further match the SDG 2, we created a government incentive which would allow homeless people to collect one of these bags from a collection point as well as several pre-packed meals to ensure that everyone is getting a healthy meal, regardless of whether they can afford food or not.
Before I started to design the logo for our bag/brand, I decided to do some research on competitor brands and their logos. From my research, I have found out that many bag companies' logos are minimalistic and include little to no text. This is due to the logo needing to be simple enough to go onto the bag without losing too much detail.
After conducting my research, I began to design our logo. At the start of my design process, I wanted to incorporate the letter 'D' into the logo which stood for 'Dyna-pack', so I used the shape of the D to symbolise the bag. However, upon reflection of my research, I decided to use an actual bag in the logo instead of the letter 'D'.
As part of the brand guidelines, I created two logos which can be used together. The main logo would be used in advertisement and would be the main logo on our products whereas the alternate logo would be used when it is not possible for the main logo to be used. For example, when creating clothing and other merchandise. To show our brand's colour scheme, I have chosen to use the colours in the logos. In the brand guidelines, I have also included a typography section which shows the font that we would use throughout our brand. Our chosen font is Damascus.
To create the initial wireframe of my app design, I used a drag and drop based website. This allowed me to place certain components onto each screen. However, this software did not allow me to interact with my design which lead me to use a different software called Adelo to create the final app design which did allow me to use interactive components in my design.
